14 Years of Physio-logical, Hampshire in Business.
Our Journey – Happy Birthday!
Today is our 14th Birthday! To mark our birthday this year we held a special offer week and held a raffle at our Stansted Park clinic with all proceeds going to the amazing Rowans Hospice, total ticket sales have reached a fantastic £260! And the winner of the raffle will receive a lovely hamper packed full of treats from the local Stansted Farm Shop, as well as some physiotherapy equipment and a free session at Physio-logical!
At this time of year I really enjoy looking back at where I have come from and where Physio-logical as a team are now, so keep reading as I share with you my journey as a private physiotherapist…
The last year…
What a whirlwind year, it has been exciting and non stop!
We have grown and developed both our team and the services we have to offer at Physio-logical on the Stansted Park Estate, Rowlands Castle.
We welcomed two new full time therapists to the team in September 2021 and January 2022, also our new kickstart reception/administrator.
It has been brilliant to be able to grow as a leader, to support and assist with the teams personal development and skill set, and what has been great is to be able to share ideas and learn from each other.
September 2021 we completed our first Challenge 30! Beach Clean on Hayling island – we were blessed with lovely sunny weather (watch this space for this years September Beach Clean and how you can get involved).
November 2021 we moved our diary management system online including our clinical notes and greatly improved the user experience of our online booking system.
December 2021 we were delighted to have won the title of ‘Community Business of the Year 2021 in Hampshire’ at the SME News Magazine 2021 Southern Enterprise Awards. We also celebrated our amazing year with a nice team meal together.
January 2022 we launched our new Shockwave therapy service. We have had, and continue to see great results, one of our shockwave patients commented; ‘It’s the best my Achilles has felt in years!’
As a family (March family) we continued to support the amazing Rowans Hospice, we raised a total of £4000 – I ran my first ever marathon, our children baked a cake in the Rowans hospice ‘Bake Off’ challenge and my husband and I completed the 3 peaks challenge in 23 hours 44 mins!!
Wow it has been a busy year!!
So why did I set up a private clinic?
A few reasons:
- My dad was made redundant in his fifties from an operations director position, he always encouraged my sisters and I to work for ourselves. The reason being if it didn’t work out then we would only have ourselves to blame, also, we would not get made redundant in our fifties! Thanks to my mum who always supported us and worked tirelessly looking after us, our children and our family.
- I wanted to be able to have time to listen to each patient and then work with them to achieve their goals whether that be; being able to walk to the local shops, run a marathon, play tennis or their sport or run around with their grandchildren.
- I wanted to be able to work with patients to get them 100% better and fully achieve their goals set.
- I didn’t want to be told I could only provide a limited number of sessions and only give patients exercise sheets. I wanted to be able to offer hands on treatment combined with exercises.
- To be able to offer flexible appointment times and treat patients quickly after an injury, ache or pain rather than not getting to see them for weeks or months after their pain/ache started.
- I wanted to be in control of my own diary so I could take and pick my children up from school, watch their school plays and sports days too.
Why did I choose to become a Physiotherapist?
The truth is I didn’t know what I wanted to do.
I was always playing sport at school and I was Sports Captain in my last year of school, so I knew I wanted to do something which involved sport.
I went to a careers advisor. She told me I could study sports science at Uni. I asked what job I could get after that, at the time it seemed limited. I wanted to study something then have a job at the end of it, hence why I chose to study Physiotherapy.
Another reason; my sister is a physiotherapist and she said I would like it and I followed in her footsteps! She trained at Brunel University, she graduated in the July 2000 and I started at Brunel Uni studying physiotherapy in September 2000.
I like working with people, I love to listen and be able to help people to live a better life.
When did I start working privately?
My journey began in my front room in 2008, in my 1 bedroom house in Basingstoke, Hampshire. I used to treat friends and family on a fold away couch.
Word of mouth grew and one person I treated put me in contact with someone at Active for Life Centre, gymnastics centre in Basingstoke.
Here I set up my first private clinic.
At this time I was still working for NHS in Basingstoke too, plus I was the physiotherapist for Basingstoke Rugby Club.
In June 2008 I had the opportunity to reduce my NHS hours and work for NHS part time and Nuffield Health part time, I was a corporate physiotherapist on site at Vodafone HQ in Newbury.
This was a major turning point for me as I had one full day a week free where it didn’t matter if it worked for me or not pushing ahead with my own private patients.
At this time I was working from Fitness First, Basingstoke. I then moved to Regus, Chineham Business Park in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Back then it was just me with my paper diary, managing the calls/bookings. In the end I was working 12 hour days back to back. The business was building.
I then decided I needed to come up with a company name. Cue my dads friend at his gym, Tim who came up with Physio-logical.
I relocated to Denmead, Hampshire in 2009. I worked at a few local private physiotherapy companies but always knew I wanted to build my own private patients and business further.
Another major turning point was being pregnant with my first born, who is now 8 ½ years old!
At the time I had two associate physiotherapists working with me at Basingstoke. I went on a business course. I was told having a baby would be the best thing for my business. They were right it made me step back, get an administrator and get more associates too so I could take a year off with my son.
In 2010 I set up my Havant physiotherapy clinic within My Fitness Hub.
In 2012 I was lucky enough to be selected to join the 2012 Olympics as a Physiotherapist working at the Portland and Weymouth Sailing Village.
In February 2018 I started working privately in Rowlands Castle GP Surgery too, 1 day a week.
July 2018 was another big moment on my Physio-logical journey. I was still trying to run Physio-logical Basingstoke, Havant and also Rowlands Castle. With two young children and an ill family member this became too difficult. So I made a very hard decision to come out of Basingstoke and focus on Havant and Rowlands Castle, Hampshire.
This was the best decision as our Havant clinic grew and we offered a 7 day service with early, late and weekend appointments too.
We offer Physiotherapy, Shockwave, Sports Therapy, Sports Massage, Acupuncture, Physio Online and Pilates services.
Plus our Rowlands Castle clinic was fully booked most weeks too.
November 2018, I attended my first Linked in Local Portsmouth event and met the king of networking, Ian Gribble. He was very supportive, kind, encouraged me to use Linked In more, also he knew everyone!!
As all our clinics were full it was time to expand again, we opened our Horndean Clinic in March 2020. Thank you Hope Mckellar, Hope Mckellar PR for the great article in the Portsmouth News.
Then the Pandemic hit, it was time to adapt, with all our clinics closed for face to face treatments on 24th March 2020, a suggestion from Lauren De Vries from LDV was to set up a Physio Online Service. To start with I thought how can we do physio online, I was pleasantly surprised and at the peak we were seeing 20 patients per week virtually. Patients were getting better and we got some great feedback too.
Time to re evaluate, as I know a lot of people and businesses have done. With not knowing when gyms would re open I had to give notice to My Fitness Hub, Havant.
Fortunately, when we got the go ahead from our professional bodies we could offer face to face treatment again we managed to take on some more hours at our Horndean Clinic.
Long term I knew I wanted to have our own permanent base, cue Lucy Rumming, from Willow Insurance and Linked In. I saw a post to say Lucy had just got a room within Stansted Park, Rowlands Castle.
She put me in contact with Sam Hazel, from Country and Coastal Lettings who showed me around a few options for Physio-logical within Stansted Park, Rowlands Castle.
I fell in love with Stansted Park as soon as I arrived. Everyone there were so friendly, kind and helpful. I put a deposit down on The Stable Block, Stansted Park, PO9 6DU in June 2020.
Physiotherapy arrived at Stansted Park!
On 20th July 2020 our Stansted Park Physiotherapy Clinic opened, within Stansted House.
Alongside working in Rowlands Castle GP surgery as a private physio and at our Stansted Park clinic we were working hard with Stansted Park Foundation Trust to sort out plans for our brand new purpose built private physio and sports injuries clinic located behind the Stansted Park Farm Shop.
Building work started in January 2021 and our new physio clinic, within The Stable Block, Stansted Park, Rowlands Castle was opened on 10th May 2021 by Earl of Bessborough and Lady Bessborough, thank you Kimberley Barber for the Portsmouth News article.
We have had some great feedback from all of our patients. It is great to be able to help so many people to live a better life using hands on treatments and rehabilitation exercises.
Happy 14th Birthday Physio-logical!
That brings us to today, our 14th Birthday, as most people know having your own business isn’t easy. It is hard work, I do work a lot of hours but it is all worth it.
I feel proud of what I and now my Team at Physio-logical have achieved and where we are going too.
We couldn’t do it without all our lovely patients, their recommendations, the doctors, consultants, Pilates teachers, personal trainers and everyone else who refers patients to us.
Also, I couldn’t do it without the support from my amazing Husband, family, children, and my team.
Thanks everyone, here is to the next 14 years where we will continue to help all of our patients to live a better life.
