Jul 22, 2024

Patient Success Story for Gluteal Tendinopathy (Hip pain)

Mrs J attended Physio-logical as she was struggling to walk more than 5 minutes, walk upstairs, to do gardening and lie down on her right side due to pain on the outside of her hip.

On assessment her pain was due to glutes tendinopathy (pain on the outside of her hip) and weakness in gluteal muscles.  Glute tendinopathy is a painful injury; it can be acute or chronic. The condition is characterised by pain on the lateral/outside hip caused by reoccurring or prolonged compressive forces.

Signs and symptoms of Gluteal tendinopathy?

  • Pain on lateral/outside hip joint
  • Pain when lying on the problematic side
  • Discomfort walking, climbing stairs, standing and/or running
  • Pain with single leg tasks
  • Prolonged sitting is uncomfortable
  • Pain can refer down the thigh

Mrs J was given some bespoke exercises alongside shockwave therapy.

She said;

“The combination of exercises plus the Shockwave Therapy has made a massive difference. I am now able to walk further, walk upstairs and also spend more time in my garden now too”.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

This therapeutic device Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic sound waves to produce a pro-inflammatory and inflammatory response within body tissue.

The device performs vibration like impulses onto the affected area that are generated through air compression within the handheld device. This action causes increased blood flow to the area as well as stimulating tissue at a cellular level leading to improved tissue regeneration.

This helps to kickstart a stalled healing process whilst producing an analgesic effect leading to reduced pain.

What Can Be Treated with Shockwave Therapy?

This form of treatment will be recommended to patients presenting with a number of conditions such as:
